Sheltering Under the Family Tent

My son Jonathan and I just returned from a very special trip to Spain. First we visited with friends at their family caseta (tent) at the Feria de Abril in Sevilla. Then, after a couple of days in Madrid at the Club Gourmet food show, we spent a night with old friends in a windswept Catalán stone village in which only 140 souls dwell.

The Feria de Abril is an extraordinary event, which occurs each spring along the banks of the Guadalquivir River. Every year thousands of Sevillians return to their individual casetas at the spring fair to gather for a week with their extended family and friends. Mi hijo Jonathan y yo acabamos de regresar de un viaje muy especial a España. El principal propósito de nuestra visita era el de encontrarnos con nuestros proveedores ya de muchos años en el Salón del Gourmet, una exposición y feria de la alimentación en Madrid. Sin embargo el resto del viaje se convirtió en lo más memorable. Primero visitamos a nuestros amigos en su caseta familiar de la Feria de Abril de Sevilla. Después, tras un par de días en la feria de la alimentación de Madrid, pasamos una noche con nuestros amigos en una aldea catalana de casas de piedra azotada por el viento y en la que sólo viven 140 personas.

Lo que me atrajo de la cultura española cuando desembarqué en suelo español hace ya más de cuarenta años fue la manera en la que las gentes españolas mimaban a sus hijos, y el valor capital que le otorgan a la familia. See full spanish article...
